Today, Samsung showcased updates to its iconic foldable smartphone line and refreshed its smartwatch and tablet product during its Unpacked event in Seoul, Korea. In some ways, smartphone launches have become incredibly predictable. Typically, Samsung would announce improved displays, better cameras, and enhanced durability. What were some of the best enhancements this time?
The hinge you’ve been waiting for
By the time you reach your fifth iteration of a product line, a company should have fixed any annoyance that existed in the earlier generations. A company’s also expected to find a way to surprise and delight with each iteration. Samsung gathered insights from its existing customers to create refinements that matter to many customers. One of the most significant advances was the creation of a flattened hinge called the Flex Hinge. Google’s Pixel Fold caused quite a stir in the smartphone marketplace this year when it launched with a new hinge allowing the phone to close without any gaps. At unpacked, Samsung announced the long-awaited zero gap hinge. The result is the phone feels thinner and is less likely to collect dust on the inside. The hinge should also help with durability.

Finally, a useable screen on the Z Flip 5
The new Flex Window on the Galaxy Z Flip5 is now 3.78 times larger than the previous generation. Size truly matters because it makes everything more readable and glanceable. In my opinion, the larger display makes the screen usable for the first time, enabling more text and larger images to be displayed on the front of the device. It is now a suitable screen size to run widgets allowing users to check the weather, control music playback, and change settings quickly from the front screen. There’s also the ability to pinch the screen to activate Multi Widget View. Of course, once it’s unfolded, the device sports a full-sized smartphone screen that’s great for video and app use.
Durability for longer contract durations
Foldable durability was always a concern for consumers, especially since they keep their smartphones for 30 months or longer. In its fifth foldable generation, Samsung’s addressed any lingering consumers by equipping the main screen with a shock dispersion layer, a redesigned back for a more solid display, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus2 to the front and rear screens. These smartphones can survive drops and offer better scratch resistance with Victus 2 fitted to the front and rear surfaces. The smartphones provide IPX82 support which means your device will function properly even after being submerged in fresh water for up to 30 minutes under specific conditions. In 2022, Samsung announced Armor Aluminum frames in its Galaxy S22 and today, this material is also in the foldable line.
Unlike the days of rugged smartphones and bulky Otterbox cases, business users can opt for a foldable product that combines durability with a cool factor. While the price tag is too steep for a company to outfit its entire office with foldable smartphones, these devices should be on the shortlist of executives and for consideration of the flagship smartphone offering in both corporate-owned and bring-your-own-device (BYOD) programs. And if you’re still worried about durability, you can always purchase Samsung Care+. Samsung shared that consumers that purchase a Galaxy Z Flip5 or Galaxy Z Fold5 Scan get Samsung Care+ for a 30% discount.
It’s a better processor, but it’s the same battery and still expensive.
Samsung now uses the Snapdragon® 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, the same processor as the S23. It kept the same battery which is a bit disappointing. Durability and price were crucial concerns for the earlier versions of the product. Samsung’s addressed durability but at $999 and $1,799 price is still a concern for many. However, given that Google’s Pixel Fold entered the foldable market at the same price point, we won’t see much movement on the list price in the United States. A bendy phone with hardened materials and a solid chipset is still expensive to manufacture. However, this is where U.S. carrier promotions enter to assist consumers with getting over the price hurdle.
AT&T announced that new & existing AT&T customers can get a free Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 or up to $1,000 off the Galaxy Z Fold5 with a Galaxy phone trade-in from any year that is in any condition. T-Mobile, not one to be outdone in the promotions category, offered a free Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 (or up to $1,000 off the Galaxy Z Fold5) when adding a line or with an eligible trade-in on Go5G Plus, Magenta MAX, or Go5G Business Plus. It also offered a 50% discount on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 (or up to $500 off the Galaxy Z Fold5) with eligible trade-in or $600 off when adding a line on T-Mobile’s most popular plans.
Verizon also met the ante with a Switcher Offer that said if you trade-in select phones and get a Galaxy Z Flip5 for free or $1,000 towards a new Galaxy Z Fold5. A new line on an Unlimited Plus plan is required. For those looking to upgrade, Verizon said you can trade-in select phones on qualified 5G Unlimited plans and receive up to $1,000 off the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 or Z Fold5. So, if you’re looking to save $1,000, there are several ways to do so.
My take
For years, the Galaxy Note line was my go-to flagship Samsung smartphone for productivity. Today, it’s the Galaxy Z Fold. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 feels lighter, which helps with one-hand use and makes it easier to carry in your pocket. The new hinge eliminates what was admittedly a minor annoyance, and the camera now matches that of Samsung’s flagship S22 line. The Galaxy Z Fold blends a tablet’s features with a smartphone’s portability. It has a screen that’s larger enough to edit documents and spreadsheets. It also provides a big screen to view a presentation in a web conference while you take notes in a split screen view. The new enhanced screen has up to 1750 nits of brightness, making it easier to use in multiple environments.
The S-Pen is 40% thinner in size, and its functionality allows you to do fine-grained control in apps such as Adobe Creative Suite and sign contracts while on the go. I still wish it could be carried within the smartphone, but it’s already difficult enough to make it thin and light. The screen size hasn’t really changed, but the tablet-like size makes reading a book, playing a game, or shopping online work seamlessly. The Google Pixel Fold has a different take on the screen’s shape with a slightly squarer design. Both are interesting. In this case, you must feel both devices and decide how you’d carry them. For example, do they fit in your pocket, bag, etc? With tablets ranging from $500 to $1000, the Z Fold 5 punches above its weight by combining functionality.
Now if you want a sexy, portable smartphone that, when unfolded, touts the screen size of the iPhone, then the Z Flip5 is for you. It fits in any pocket or bag. Between the Bespoke editions and a color palette that picks up on the latest fashion trends, consumers get compact designs and customization options that combine style, functionality, and durability. The Z Flip5 was already touted as a device designed to support selfies and simplify image capture. Samsung continues to refine this in the Z Flip 5 with features like Dual Preview8 that lets the user see themselves in the Flex Window so they can adjust the shot in real-time. The launch highlighted a mixture of incremental changes and delightful updates which speaks to Samsung’s maturing of the foldable market.
The entire software market is going through a rather substantial change based on advancements such as generative AI. After Microsoft’s Build, Charles Lamana and Emily He of Microsoft shared an update with industry analysts on the state of AI across Microsoft’s portfolio. Many remember Marc Andreessen’s famous quote saying that software was eating the world. Lamana described how the software evolved from green screens to browser-based SaaS applications but that, as an industry, we hadn’t fundamentally changed the software industry’s economics, workflow, and operations. In a revised take on Andreessen’s quote, Lamana said, “AI is eating software.” It aptly describes how we’re entering a new era of software and technology rapidly changing by adding AI capabilities.
The market experienced a seismic shift in AI innovation in the past six months focused on how foundation models change what’s possible in software through natural language understanding, image, and video generation, and simplification of software programming. These large-scale transformer models can also deliver new functions, such as Windows UI automation.
AI has the potential to change the way a company tracks its financials, delivers goods and how it services to its customers. AI will also launch new applications, experiences, and data-driven products. To that end, Microsoft announced a plethora of assistive tools that it calls Copilots across its suite of products. The idea behind a copilot is that it will assist, not replace, an individual by providing the right data within the task context. AI copilots accelerate an individual’s productivity by collecting information, automating workflows, and accelerating task completion.
Microsoft shared many examples of how it anticipates generative AI will change workflows and processes across the business. For example, a copilot can assist a customer service agent by surfacing the latest information found across a company from a vast set of internal documents, including previously resolved case notes and published knowledge articles. It shared a real-world example based on its use of the technology.
Today all of Microsoft Azure’s thousands of support engineers use the Dynamics 365 customer service Copilot to provide Azure support to Azure customers. With this software, the agent doesn’t have to spend time searching for information. Dynamics 365 customer service knows the context from the company’s internal data, including customer names and relevant knowledge articles. It can surface all the relevant information and timelines for the case an agent is working on. The Copilot expands on the right side of an agent’s screen and can help the agent draft a reply to a customer with just one click using generative AI.
In sales, a copilot can summarize a call with a prospect and generate a draft of a follow-up email. Across the general business, an AI-enhanced workspace suite can help employees draft emails, prepare for meetings, and explore data. Marketing teams will benefit from content ideas, data inspiration, and social media post suggestions. For supply chain and finance teams, it can assist with items such as status reports.
Lopez Research describes these as right-time experiences because it provides the right information and insights at the point of need. Today’s artificial intelligence services are different from what we discussed three years ago, which had focused more on the automation of routine. Three years ago, the technology wasn’t there to build copilots from an infrastructure and AI foundation model perspective. Lamana described this as “AI before foundation models, and AI after foundation models’ as the pivot point for why we can offer AI-assisted applications today.
Emily He shared a business update demonstrating that the concepts resonated with customers. While the technology had been in limited preview, Microsoft said that it had over 40,000 organizations using these generative AI capabilities in Microsoft business applications, which surprised me. At one point, the company said 600 customers were trialing various features. Whether it’s prompt engineering or even figuring out how a company can create custom-tune versions of chat GPT, Microsoft said its latest announcements were driven by customer feedback.
One item that has surprised the market is the rapid cadence of Microsoft’s co-pilot releases across its software portfolio. During Microsoft Build, we learned that Microsoft created a co-pilot framework to scale the design of new copilots. It has also invested heavily in engineering, AI infrastructure, Microsoft-created AI models, and partnering with Open AI for several years. Coupling its AI investments with OpenAI’s foundation models has proven a successful strategy, given the myriad announcements Microsoft has made since March of 2023.
Yet, AI is not without its challenges for organizations. Companies must design data strategies that allow them to use a combination of open source and more private generative AI models without compromising security, privacy, and regulatory compliance. It’s a crucial question that many IT buyers have asked Lopez Research. To alleviate these concerns, Microsoft offers Azure OpenAI Services allowing an organization to use its data with OpenAI and Azure storage encrypted at rest with Microsoft Managed Keys within the same region as the resource. This structure preserves all the security and permissions without placing proprietary data directly into open-source models.
For years I’ve been discussing the potential of AI for business, but it always lacked the connection to the applications and the workflow. Today, Microsoft and other technology vendors are pulling these core capabilities into their applications to seamlessly integrate AI into business workflows to make individuals more productive without needing to learn how to use AI. This is a great step for the industry.
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, speaking about AI at the company’s Executive Forum in Mountain View, CA
Google Cloud held an Executive Forum in June to discuss its latest AI advancements with customers and partners. The company’s CEO, Thomas Kurian, shared how the cloud market is undergoing a transformative shift, and at the core of this reinvention is the evolution of AI, particularly generative AI. Generative AI helps businesses create content, synthesize and organize information, automate business processes, and build engaging customer experiences. To achieve these goals, Kurian said the company would focus on five key priorities: world-class AI infrastructure, multi-model foundational models, deep integration with Google Workspace and Google Cloud Platform, AI-powered collaboration, and a broad ecosystem of partners.
At the heart of Google Cloud’s generative AI offerings are foundation models. Foundation models are large AI models trained on enormous quantities of unlabeled data. Google employs self-supervised learning to optimize these models. These generalized models can perform various tasks, such as recognizing, predicting, and generating text, images, software code, audio, and video.
Google said its customers can access over 60 models from Google and its partners. To make AI accessible to a broader range of organizations, Google provides the ability to make its foundation models, such as PaLM 2, available in smaller, cost-efficient configurations tailored for different applications and use cases. Companies can customize PaLM 2 through adaptation, transfer learning, and distillation techniques. These models come in different sizes, each with performance, latency, cost, and memory requirements, ensuring flexibility for different scenarios. PaLM 2’s latest enhancements improve its to perform advanced reasoning tasks, including code and math, classification and question answering, translation and multilingual proficiency, and natural language generation.
Additionally, Google offers Vertex AI, an end-to-end AI platform that streamlines the deployment of AI and generative models, allowing companies to customize AI models for their specific applications. Vertex AI offers three essential generative AI capabilities: model discovery and tuning, customization tools, and control over data and IP. With Vertex AI, customers can discover and tune foundation models from Google and its partners. The platform enables seamless model scaling, reinforcement learning feedback loops automation, synthetic data generation for testing, and management of deployment locations and costs. Businesses can refine Google’s models to improve performance and specific tasks using prompt engineering, finetuning, parameter-efficient tuning, and reinforcement learning.
One crucial area of concern for organizations is corporate data protection when using large foundation models from third parties. Google said its enterprise services ensure complete control and segregation of data, IP protection, and compliance with regulatory requirements when customizing models. Customer data remains confidential and isn’t shared with other customers or with Google’s foundation models.
Companies want to leverage Google’s expertise and lessons learned in designing and scaling AI models. But you may find yourself wondering what, if anything, are real companies doing with these solutions. Google provided several examples of how customers and partners are using Vertex AI. For instance, an aerospace company, GA Telesis, developed a data extraction solution that automates customer calls by interpreting and correlating customer orders. Snorkel AI, a data science company, uses Vertex AI to generate high-quality training data and train models to customize patient treatments. Organizations like YouCite and Behavior Box utilize generative AI models on the Vertex AI platform to enhance employee interactions and identify insider threats.
Google featured speakers from the Mayo Foundation, Priceline, Wayfair and Wendy’s at the executive forum. These Google Cloud customers shared their insights on AI’s challenges, opportunities, and practical applications. Each organization sees tremendous opportunities in AI and has been working with Google on AI solutions for many years.
The combination of search and chat has become a hot topic in the customer experience world. The panel discussed how companies are looking for ways that search and chat can work together seamlessly using generative AI. Unsurprisingly, travel companies have been attempting to create more personalized customer experiences. Priceline shared that generative AI would help it create a more connected travel experience that incorporates all its products but also surfaces additional relevant information for its customers when they travel.
Like many healthcare organizations, Mayo Foundation seeks ways to minimize employee burnout. It uses generative AI and search to surface complex clinical and medical information to clinicians and administrators. Ideally, it would like to automate some of the clinicians’ and administrators’ routine tasks to allow their employees more time to focus on what matters. Mayo spoke of the importance of having a human in the loop at these early stages of any new AI development. In multiple discussions with various companies, Lopez Research has learned that having a person review the model’s output for intent and accuracy is crucial because AI models frequently don’t perform as expected. AI requires finetuning.
Wayfair spoke about the challenges of the home category and the need to match AI with search capabilities. For example, looking for the perfect couch for your living room is very different than finding out the score of the latest NBA game. In retail, there’s not one right answer; it is a journey. Wayfair spoke about how its company employed machine learning capabilities over time to understand customer intent and match customers to the perfect product.
Wayfair has a framework for generative AI and a small cross-functional team that reviews what AI use cases deliver value but still require a human in the loop to audit outputs and minimize enterprise risk. Wayfair has fast-tracked use cases for customer service, sales, and code-generation assistants. Going forward, Wayfair wants to focus on more intentional and differentiated features for its customers, such as delivering generative imagery.
Wendy’s wanted to improve the pickup window process’s speed, accuracy and consistency. Wendy’s has over 30 menu products that can be customized. Additionally, its customers may order products in ways that differ from the menu board. Wendy’s uses AI technology, specifically items such as Dialogflow, to help it figure out how to automate the order-taking process. In June, Wendy’s launched its first pilot using new generative AI offerings, such as Vertex AI, to have conversations with customers that include the ability to understand made-to-order requests and generate responses to frequently asked questions. The goal is to eliminate the ordering process’s complexity by leveraging generative AI. Wendy’s will use Google’s foundational LLMs with the data from Wendy’s menu and established business rules and logic for conversation guardrails. Instead of solving a single problem, Wendy’s said it wants to create a platform approach that solves problems across Wendy’s various channels beyond drive-thru to include mobile applications. Wendy’s says it has seen early success in using language models in order-taking. It also noted that employees aren’t worried about job displacement of jobs because the order-taking process is one job of several jobs they’re doing in the restaurant. Wendy’s noted the benefits of engaging staff and franchisees early in the technical design phase by providing proof of concepts and gathering feedback.
Priceline shared that a developer’s mindset must change to developing an experience instead of features. The developer must design an experience that optimizes the inputs and outputs of a large language model, which requires a completely different skill set than being proficient in writing JavaScript. For example, in prompt engineering, the developer must decide how the prompts get weighted in terms of price or have value for the customer. Prompts are crucial in communicating and directing the behavior of Large Language Models (LLMs) AI. Prompts are the inputs or queries people use to get answers from a model. Priceline also shared that companies underestimate the need to purchase real-time data infrastructure solutions to enable generative AI. A company needs to be able to measure and monitor AI models within their ecosystem.
Wayfair noted that even digitally native companies have legacy digital solutions. It shared how Google helped it move from a monolithic code base and database to a cloud-native architecture. It also uses Vertex AI and Gen App Builder to make it easier for data scientists and machine learning engineers to quickly get onboarded to a platform so the teams can focus on building and experimenting without worrying about designing ML infrastructure. It’s using BERT to help it understand its customer’s intentions within search.
Mayo said it’s been using the large language models for some time, with Generative AI as the latest iteration in its AI toolkit. Healthcare has always struggled with searching and finding information. Mayo said an average patient has 7,000 to 8,000 data points. The average physician sees 10 to 15 patients a day. Like Wayfair, Mayo Foundation has been working with Google for some time. It used Google’s natural language processing (NLP) capabilities before generative AI to gather and synthesize unstructured data more easily, and generative AI furthers these efforts. Cris Ross, Mayo Clinic’s Chief Information Officer, shared the following in a press release about the collaboration between the two companies. “Google Cloud’s tools have the potential to unlock sources of information that typically aren’t searchable in a conventional manner, or are difficult to access or interpret, from a patient’s complex medical history to their imaging, genomics, and labs.” https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/google-cloud-collaborates-with-mayo-clinic-to-transform-healthcare-with-generative-ai-301844437.html
Obviously, the Mayo Foundation is also concerned with patient data security. It spoke of the benefits of a secure enclave with private customer keys to ensure data privacy, control where the data resides with an auditable view, and encryption at rest. It also wants to provide its innovators with safe, secure sandboxes for research and development tests. The Mayo Foundation shared that no model will be 100% perfect but said what’s more important is how it measures a model’s accuracy and provides confidence in what the model is good at. It believes you don’t need to go directly to patient diagnosis to make AI successful because there’s so much low-hanging fruit to reduce paperwork and administrative burdens. For example, we can change the patient experience by giving clinicians a summary of their records before the doctor sees them.
Wayfair noted one of the largest differences in AI today is that all companies have access to foundational capabilities as a service to help you jumpstart your AI efforts. Before this, you had to hire highly skilled people, build AI infrastructure, and adopt AI software tools. The availability of AI-specific services from multiple providers is a game changer for organizations looking to deploy AI.
Adaire Fox-Martin, President of Google Cloud GTM & Head of Google Ireland, closed the panel with an appropriate line that sums up the opportunity ahead of us when she said, “You can reimagine, not just a process, but an entire industry with AI’s capabilities. It’s a formative time for generative AI across the industries.”
Customer experience (CX) requirements have changed. Consumers expect every company to deliver a consistent, best-in-class experience through various channels ranging from physical locations to digital channels and contact centers. Despite the popularity of digital channels, contact centers play a crucial role in managing the entire customer lifecycle.
The role of contact center agents has expanded as new market demands require agents to field calls that range from general sales to detailed technical support. Contact centers have long been known for their high staff turnover, with average agent attrition of 30 to 45 percent annually. Agents struggle to keep up as call volume and complexity increase. The repetitive and often monotonous work also negatively impacts employee engagement. Attrition also increased for many firms in the last two years as agents struggle to meet higher customer expectations.
